28 May 2008
ugh.
i woke up too early
i got distracted (curses on you internet!)
the kids slept too long
i forgot to put the car seat in the car
it was raining
it is garbage day
we forgot
i had to park the car
run back to our garbage can & pull it to the street
Q was late for school
i was late to meet my friend to walk
i took miss m to the bathroom in the mall
she peed the second i pulled her pants down
all over me & the floor
i dropped my purse in a puddle
i couldn't get the stroller to fold down & fit in the trunk
i got pulled over on the way to pick Q up from school
i cried a lot
i still got a speeding ticket
Q hugged me & his head bumped my chin & now i have a little fat lip
i'm having some intestinal issues if you know what i mean
my water tastes like bleach
my ipod headphones broke
& so did the ones that i bought from the dollar store
it's still raining
peas are yucky
pencils are stupid
i think i'll move to australia
:(
12 May 2008
& a one & a two
the other day i was looking around for my little girlie
where was she?
she loves to play 'hide seek'
& so i thought maybe she was doing that
which by the way
is always a bit scary if she forgets to tell me she is playing
because then i'm all
'miss m...
where are you...
miss m?
where are you?
MISS M!!!!!
WHERE ARE YOU???'
& all the while she is hiding & silently giggling
because i can't find her...
who made up that game anyway?
okay
so
i found her & she was not playing hide seek
she was piling on layers of her brother's underwear
notice how they are not on top of each other?
but in lovely layers
like a cute little skirt
i'm calling it the underoos mini
& it will be available at urban outfitters next season...
& the boy...
oh the boy
we decided to clean out mr. Q's closet yesterday
the part where he keeps all of his clothes
(right here let me give some advice to the moms out there
or moms to be (not naming any names)
hi moms!
it is fun to buy clothes for your kids, isn't it?
i mean really
how could it not be?
unlike buying clothes for yourself
(myself anyway)
you pretty much know they will fit
& they cost like a third of what adult clothes cost
plus
dear target:
please stop making adorable clothing for kids
it makes walking through the kids department
like walking through a peanut m&m factory
& not having just one little taste.
thank you good bye
i mean good buy
emily ruth...
okay so advice:
don't buy any clothing for your child
(especially your boy child)
unless you know for certain
that you will regret it on your death bed
that you didn't get that cute striped thermal shirt
why you ask?
well, firstly because
you will get lots of cute hand me downs
from your friends with great taste
(& how could they not have great taste?
they are your friends aren't they?)...
but more importantly
because no matter how many adorable
polo shirts you get them
or cool retro button ups
inevitably they will wear the same five t.shirts over & over...
you know the ones with cartoon characters
that you swore you would never let your kids wear
& also that four sizes too big hockey jersey that you
let him buy at value village
you know?
the one that says 'ackerson' on the back?
that's why...
save your money people!
use it on yourself!)
anyway
so
we were clearing out the closet
& we were playing a game called
'give or keep'
(i assume this is self explanatory)
he really liked this game
even though i was cheating
because even when he said keep
if knew he hadn't worn it in weeks, if ever
i would wait until his back was turned
& bury it in the give pile...
i know
rotten rotten...
after the game was over we played a new game called
where should everything go?
(another bit of advice:
just let them decide where their clothes go
they are the ones who are getting dressed in the morning
who cares if it makes no sense to you?
go arrange your own closet!)
so we put the underwear in that slot
& the trillion pairs of shorts in that spot
& the one pair of pants over there
& the shirts on the floor
(heed my advice!)
& then came time to decide on the socks
& this is the absolutely genius idea
that my son came up with
geez, i love those kids...
love, the mom of
merra versace
& Q the idea man...
:)

ole'
some of you may know
that one of my favorite bloggers is tara whitney
she is funny
& colorful
& such an amazing photographer...
so
she has started a new little thing
one project a month
opam
& you can join right in...
just choose one project in your house
(fun or otherwise)
that you have been putting off
& commit to doing it this month...
post some pictures of the before
on your blog
or on your fridge
or on your front door...
then break the project down into manageable bits
& go for it!
then post your redo pics at the end of the month
or whenever you finish the job...
you can even post a link on tara's blog
& look at others projects...
very fun
for my may opam
i have chosen the kid's bathroom...
i have had ideas for it in my head since we moved in
almost exactly four years ago
(Q was three weeks old...
can you say crazy?
although no one really let me do too much
having a newborn & all
so maybe not too crazy actually...)
& even though i have an idea in my head
& could describe it in full detail
the elfins bathroom continues to look like this
& this
& this

& yes
that was a sombrero on the toilet
we really fiesta right around here...
what i would like to do
is make it really fun & colorful
with some frames
& other stuff
& happily we have lots of frames & other stuff
in our house
so i am so set:)
hope you might play along too...
we can do it!

that's why.
i have finally come to the realization
that 'because i said so' is a perfectly legitimate
answer to the question 'why?' that
so easily flows from the lips of my little elf these days...
i never really said it before
maybe because he didn't question every request i made before...
maybe because i bought into the years of hearing that
it's not a good answer to give kids when their curious minds
just want to know how the world works...
maybe i made a silent promise to myself that i wouldn't ever say it...
just maybe...
who knows?
& who cares, really?
'because i said so' is a good answer
maybe not to some questions
like 'where is the rake?'
or 'why is that bunny doing that to the other bunny'
i mean really
that doesn't
even make sense...
but i know i thought that it was just a last resort answer
because you were so tired of the 'why why why?'
but now that i am wiser & older
older anyway
i know that it is a plea
a plea disguised
it is a plea to respect your parent
& just trust that i have a reason for the insane request
that you stop singing jingle bells at the top of your lungs
or to wear shoes when we walk over
the pile of broken glass that
we are collecting in the back yard...
because, of course
the most important word in the sentence is 'i'
as in me
as in your mother
as in the person who
one time
when you were about 8 months old
& puking your guts out every hour or so
held you, your little face on my shoulder
as you oh so delicately barfed right down the back of my shirt
& did not drop you
or even cringe
(well, maybe i cringed a little)
so as not to wake you up
& your dad was not here
so i sat with you on me
in my horrible terrible no good very stinky shirt
for about an hour
so that you could sleep.
yeah that me.
because it's not always the actual act that is the issue...
would i prefer that every piece of pasta in the house wasn't in the bathtub?
sure.
would my sheets look better if they didn't have marker on them?
yes.
would we have been able to resell the diaper champ if you hadn't written all over it with an orange sharpie?
YES.
but in the end
i really just want you to trust me, okay?
there's nothing i'm going to do to you that
a very talented therapist can't undo in about twenty years...
& so dear citizens
i leave you with this one thought:
'because i said so' rocks
(let's make t-shirts)
:)
& now here's a picture of the cute elf
because i feel guilty
(i'll have a post about that 'because phrase' soon...
it will be a two parter
that's for darn sure)
:)

happy birthday miss m!
you are so
fashionable
(outfits are always okayed by you now)
polite
(always with the please & thank you!)

(you always help kids who are hurt
even when you are the one hurting them:)
passionate
(i've never heard a 'NO!' quite like yours)
kind
(when anyone sneezes or coughs you say 'bless you!')
messy
(but always cute!)
smart
(numbers & abc's...you love to say them!)
girlie
(never leave the house without a purse full of treasures)
adorable
(singing all day long)
full of life
(we say 'merra is always really really happy
unless she's really really mad!')
maternal
('baby sleeping...baby needs diaper... baby crying
oh baby okay baby?' with your dolly)
sweet
(you L-O-V-E love Q! oh how you love Q)
astounding
(asking to go potty already?!?
on your own? what?!?)
fun fun fun
(you are always laughing & making jokes:
'cow says woof woof...ahahahahaha'
& you throw your head back laughing...
the next seinfeld i tell you!)
you are a gift, miss m& we love you sooo much!
ps here's a picture of your actual birthday dayvery fancy no?

(looks like your baby ate too much)

you are my favorite four year old!
can't wait to spend this next year with you...
:)
17 April 2008
nobody does it better...
in the last half hour i have...
laughed out loud
laughed to myself
thought 'oh my gosh...i can't believe he just said that'
teared up
grinned
shuddered
thought 'what an idiot!'
grimaced
chuckled
cheered
sighed
rolled my eyes
& thought 'has any tv couple ever been cuter than pam & jim?'
& that
my dear friends
is the genius
that is
the office
:)
now go watch it...
again...
ps i teared up twice actually
(spoiler alert!)
when kevin talked about breaking up
& that the parking space thing made him feel better
very cute...
& when jim said that
he bought the ring after they had been dating for a week...
i have to say the other part of the genius is
that pam & jim have no drama
they are just like a normal fun couple who like each other...
you love them
& you want to invite them over for a dinner party
as long as it's nothing like the dinner party at jan & michael's house
:)
'bye-bye miss chair model lady'
:)

12 April 2008
you're not a loser...you're just not a winner
well, except for three of you...yep that's right
three!
the random drawing
& the winner of
the crazy fun prize pack
is janna!
go janna!
:)
& the caption prize is a tie...
yes i know
can you say cop out?
but i have such a hard time choosing
i just want everyone to like me...
so the one that made me laugh was
'stupid cake'
& the reason being that
i'm quite sure that is almost exactly what he was thinking...
he was having a B-A-D bad day
a sad, three year old hard day
& then miss m gets a cake?
stupid cake!
:)
nice job angie!
i did laugh, yes i did
:)
the third winner is because
after i read hers
i had to go look at the picture again
because even though that was his mad face
it really did look like he was thinking
'what smells like bunny farts?'
the boy's got the nose wrinkle down...
so
nice one kimberly!
email me your email & your address
& i will send you a little pack of fun:)
begulka(at)comcast(dot)net
(i love it when people write their emails like that
spam be gone!)
i know how to deliver the other ones, j & a
so look out for a box on your porch
:)
hey, thanks to everyone
who stopped by
it was so fun to read your comments
you're a great bunch of kids
:)
ps i did not make that cake
my standard line
if someone asks if i made anything edible is
'i made it...look cute on the plate...after i bought it from the store'
my talented sister in law, susan made it
& it was for easter
but we came in from the south
& we comandeered that cake
yes we did
we said
'we are the gulkas
the mighty mighty gulkas
every where we go
people wanna know
who we are
so we tell them...'
& then they all said
'you are dorks
we are gulkas too
stop singing
& we will put two candles on the bunny cake!'
thanks, susan!
you are a gem:)
pps i loved the kids comments!
that was really fun...
thanks, moms:)
i haven't forgotten...
i am just a bad planner!
we are doing a combined birthday party for Q & miss m today
so i will post the winners later tonight
promise!

07 April 2008
for entertainment only...not investment purposes
in honor of this, my 201st posti'm having a contest!
thousands will enter
two will win
okay hundreds will enter
two will win
tens?
more than one?
come on people give me something...
anyway
two ways to win...
one:
leave a comment
that's it
leave a comment
i know!
i ask a lot when i give stuff away
two:
write a caption or title
to the picture above that will probably get me in trouble
when & if mr. Q ever reads this much of my blog
but
& i say this with all the love in my heart
it's totally worth it!
& come on
it's not like he's naked!
or watching 'big brother'
now THAT would be embarrassing...
anyway
you only have to enter once
the first drawing will be totally random
so if you leave a caption you could win the first one.
the second prize package
(yes i said package)
will be the best caption
as chosen by none other than me...
if i laugh out loud that's a plus
& if i snort you're pretty much a shoe-in...
okay
the prizes
the random drawing winner will receive
a box filled to the brim
(or at least half way)
with my favorite things:
raindrops on roses
& whiskers on kittens
doorbells
& sleigh bells
& warm woolen mittens
oh wait
those are
fraulein maria's favorite things...
i was wondering how i was going to get the whiskers off the cat
& what if i was sending the package far away?
wouldn't the raindrops dry up?
plus we need our doorbell...
thank goodness i'm not a fictional character!
okay!
MY favorite things:
*a bottle of water
(don't worry it gets better)
*a bag of baked kettle chips
(i promise!)
*a package of my favorite mint hot chocolate mix
(see?)
*a nutz over chocolate luna bar
(thus ends the edible portion of the prize)
*a great magazine
(this will be case specific...
if you don't have kids i won't send you wondertime.
if you can't name three starlets
who have been in rehab by their first names only
i won't send you US.
if you don't eat i won't send you cooking light.)
*a lovely selection of my favorite crafty supplies
sewy, painty, scrapbooky & otherwise
*a package of baby wipes
(hey! it's my prize
i can include whatever i want!
plus
baby wipes?
are you kidding me?
they are the best thing ever
& not just for baby's bottoms anymore)
*a few other things that i haven't decided on yet
the caption writer will win something great
i can't decide what yet
but it will be great
(yes, i know
lame.
but i have too many ideas!
plus i think it will depend on where the person lives...
mystery! suspense!
plus isn't just being nominated an honor?)
so there it is!
have fun!
& let me say, please
that i am so thankful for you guys!
it is so fun to read all of your comments
& get your feedback on important topics
like what to do with my bread crusts...
you have made me laugh & smile & tear up:)
& it has been so fun to click on your names & go read your blogs
some of which haven't been updated lately
(hint, hint)
& some of you have been here since the beginning
& that deserves a prize in itself
plus overlooking my non-capitalization
& wretched spelling
& constant use of smiley faces...
oh go ahead everybody!
get yourself a glass of water on me!
oh!
the contest ends on friday
maybe saturday
depending on what happens on friday...
now get cracking!
:)
04 April 2008
a rannucula by any other name...

i have so much to tell you!
& that is why i chose right now
today
when i have approximately three minutes to post...
therefore
i will just mention two things for you to go check out
& then i will be back tomorrow
with information
fun
prizes
(yes you read that right)
joy
& honey bunches of oats
'til then
start your mouses...
this book
goodness gracious
it is wonderful
this artist & her blog
her art is what i want all over our house
oh i love it!
go! go!
see you tomorrow!
or sunday
well, someday this week
whenever you stop by is fine...
i'll be here
:)
26 March 2008
seems appropriate to quote louis armstrong...
the biggest tantrum ever has been thrown
the most fast food i ever want to eat has been digested
(ugh)
the hotel room is paid for
the photos have been taken
the project is well under way
the boys are at the pool
the girlie is napping
the laptop is on
the wireless is working
the curtain is open
the snow is falling
the river is rolling
& i think to myself
what a wonderful world....
see you soon...
:)
ps
we will have a little bloggie post birthday celebration
for miss m when i get home
& can muster the energy to go through the pictures
& let me tell you
it will be good...
i have a picture that will go down in the Q files
until the end of time
loosely titled
'why couldn't i be an only child?'
pps
those glasses on the last post are from value village
they are not my grandma's glasses
nor are they mine
mine were red
thank you very much, jmb mommy...
& i will be holding off on pictures of those
until
hmmm
forever
maybe longer...
22 March 2008
grandma! what big eyes you have!
18 March 2008
pack pack

last friday i got to go see my friend jessica(finally!)
& after we had a yummy lunch
the preschoolers played in the bedroom
the toddlers wandered & talked the language only they can truly understand
& the moms worked on projects
it was so fun!
jessica was working on binding a sweet blankie
(i hope you show it on your blog!)
& i was stitching on a little project that
Q & i started last week...
he has mentioned a few times that he wanted a bag
& then he started saying he wanted a purse
& so naturally i made him a back pack...

one of my favorite blogs is angry chicken
& last year she made this dress for her daughter...
her daughter drew a picture & then she stitched it onto a dress
go look at it really
it is so darn cute
but come back
i still have a few things to tell you...
okay...
see?
isn't it so great?
also i listen to this great blog called craft sanity
& the hostess, jennifer ackerman haywood
was interviewing someone who has a white table cloth that she
sets the table with every time she has guests
& has them sign their name on it
& then she stitches over the signatures
how cool is that?
a table cloth full of your friends & families names?
i love that!
anyway
those two projects have been
wandering around the playground of my mind for a little while
& finally they met up
& said
'hey! you're fun!'
'thanks! you're cute!'
'let's hang out together & help emily design a back pack for Q'
'but i want to go down the slide'
'don't be selfish! she needs us'
'well, okay, but then can we go down the slide?'
'sure'

on craft sanity the lady suggested either extra-fine tipped sharpie or disappearing ink
for the writing
but fine tipped sharpie?
on fabric?
for a three year old?
i don't think so
i'm not sure if i could write on fabric with a fine tipped sharpie
& i am a fine tipped sharpie afficianatto
& disappearing ink was out too
have i mentioned how i am late to everything?
& i did not want to miss that party.
so regular fine tipped sharpie it was
& it worked great!
he was super cute writing his name
& then a trillion faces
& choosing which faces to use was so hard too!
so i have a few left over
maybe they will be christmas ornaments?
or little change purses?
or patches for my jean jacket!
yes!
if only i had a jean jacket...

i was a little worried that
the sharpie would be so thick that
i would be stitching over it until
he was in first grade
(just in time for the first day of school!)
but it was fine
even when i started off with a fun grass green thread
& stitched his whole name
& then decided that it was too light
& then ripped it all out
& restitched it in black
even then...
as i was finishing brian said
'you know who else is going to want one of those?'
& so a pinkie was born too
no drawing on this one
& just a bit of stitching...
still fun for my favorite girl:)

anyway the directions & pattern i used
are down there below the smiley face
if you're feeling stitchie yourself...

bonus!
i actually let them wear them
outside even
& i didn't even yell
'stop moving around
you're going to break it!'
sometimes when you make stuff for your kids
you actually have to give it to them
& let them use it...
sometimes.
this advice goes with my party advice
just in case you're keeping track...
& check out this little sweetie
on the blue foam catwalk...

okay
so on to the next project!
don't worry i will tell you all about it
as soon as i decide what it is...
:)
so yeah
there's no pattern
i just always think it's nice when people include the pattern...
but i'm not a pattern person
surprise!
directions are not my strong suit
you might say...
when i try to use a pattern
i just end up so confused
& annoyed
& yelling
'screw it!'
& that's not really something i want to yell while
crafting
unless i'm woodworking
then i take great joy in yelling
'screw it'
the whole time...
i'm sure there are directions all about the internet
on how to make a back pack
(or 'pack pack' as both of my children refer to them)
go forth & search...
:)
15 March 2008
because it was there...
Q's school has this thing calledparent's time out...
it's one morning a week
& you can take your kids
& then go do errands
or grocery shop
or help feed the homeless
or go back home & sleep...
the room they use is a huge gymnasium type place
& they have lots of trikes & little cars
& plenty of room to run around like crazy
& that is exactly what my kids do
they L-O-V-E love it...
recently i have been estate sale jonesing
no, not the jones' estate sale
just really wanting to go to one...
back before i had my kiddos
(que the waynes world 'deedly doo deedly doo'
flashback music)
i would look through the classifieds every friday
& sometimes thursday
& sometimes monday
okay every day i would look through the classifieds
especially at the estate sale section...
you see for a while i had a greeting card business
& i had a rep who sold my cards up
& down the west coast
& in colorado
& one time in new york
(thus ends the bragging part of this section
but don't worry there's more in the next section...)
one of the lines that i made
were cards with old black & white pictures on them
& then the were decorated with
old fabric & buttons & vintage ephemera
(i love that word)
so you see i had to go to these estate sales
i had to
it was my job...
so every year in the spring time
the jonesing starts
(i do know what that means
by the way
& i know that it refers to drugs
& let me state for the record that
i do not take drugs
& i never have
(in this decade)
unless watching gilmore girls is considered a drug
then i admit
i have a problem)
so last week
i opened the paper
i looked
i saw
i dropped those kids off so fast
that they were spinning...
& i made my way to a cute little house downtown
& i walked in
& suddenly i was in heaven
it was pretty amazing
God was there & he said
'look, em, there's piles of vintage linens
& vintage aprons
& vintage fabric
& vintage books
& vintage christmas decorations'
(do you get the picture?
everything was vintage)
honestly
it was exactly what you want in an estate sale
piles of great stuff
& a full basement with two big rooms
full of vintage stuff
& two small rooms
full of vintages stuff
& upstairs?
& in the garage?
& in the woodshop?
you guessed it
FULL!
as i was browsing
(read: drooling)
i heard my name & i turned to see
one of my favorite mother-in-laws
now don't go starting any rumors
i personally only have one mother-in-law
but my friend's mother-in-law's
are numerous
& some of them are even wonderful
including this one
who i have seen at other sales
(hi sue!)
she scored a box of old highlights magazines
for her granddaughter
(see? a good grandma that one)
& also some linens
because she makes
the cutest tea pot cozies this side of everywhere...
anyway
i got some great stuff
wanna see?
okay okay...
geez
i see you have been jonesing too...
the whole pile...

the sweet aprons...

cute tulip pocket on one of the aprons...
total sucker for scallops...(not the onions
or are those scallions?
so confusing)

& who doesn't need wrapping paper
of little girls performing domestic duties?
i'm going to frame it
& put it up in miss m's room
& say
this is what lies in your future, dear
are you sure you want to grow up?
kidding...
you can be whatever you want to be, miss m!
but you still have to do laundry!
unless you hire someone else to do it for you...
why didn't i think of that?
there are a few other thingsbut i'm going to save them for a future post
when the jones starts again
(okay!
no more jones talk!)
plus i'm working on a little project
for the Q man & his sister...
more to come...
have a great day
& just say no!
:)
06 March 2008
tips from your friend...the wildlife photographer...

you do not even want to hear the sound i had to make
in order to get this picture...
both kids smiling?
real live smiles?
impossible!
not if you make the sound of
a hyena getting his tail stuck in a blender
nope
make that noise
or something similar
& you will get shots like that
or like this

do something silly like
say
'hey guys look at me!
look over here & say cheese!
over here
hey guys
smile'
& you will get a picture like this...

just some photo tips
from me to you...
:)
29 February 2008
are you there, God? it's me dorkis malorkis...
so on valentine's day night (?)we got home after our party
& exchanged gifts
(don't worry this blog is rated PG
or PG-13...
which ever one doesn't have sex in it...
that's the kind of blog this is)
so brian gives me a card
actually it was more of a letter
& i was reading it
& came to a part that said:
I like to think I'm decent with finding the words to say
how much i care about you
but i found a song that says it well:
'Love is the answer
At least for most of the questions in my heart,
Like why are we here?
And where do we go?
And how come it's so hard?
It's not always easy,
And sometimes life can be deceiving,
I'll tell you one thing,
it's always better when we're together'
& so i'm reading this sweetness
& starting to cry
& there's more
so i'm reading the rest
& i'm loving it
but
in the back of my mind
i'm thinking
'i know that the only things that brian
listens to are talk radio
& podcasts
so where did he hear this adorable song?
has he been sneaking around
going to borders &
putting on those gigantic headphones
& listening to song after song
of love n' stuff?'
yes
i can be simultaneously
charmed
& insolent
& so:
er: that is such a neat song
b: don't you know it?
er: no, where did you hear it?
b: on your blog
oh.
right.
when i was shouting the praises of one
mr. jack johnson
& loving his new album
i googled 'jack johnson youtube'
& the first one that came up was better together
& it sounded cute
& jack johnsonish enough
so i put it up...
& when i posted it that was the first time i have ever heard it
& now
needless to say
i have listened to it approximately 27 thousand times
in fact on the way to taking Q to
preschool this morning
i said
'let's listen to a great song on the way'
& we did
(Q calls it 'George music'
because jack did the soundtrack for
the curious george movie)
one night a little later
after the kids were in bed
i told brian i had something for him
(again, PG)
& i put 'better together' on
& we danced in the kitchen
& decided right then & there
that it would be our song...
& thank, God for that
our song before was 'i'll be' by edwin mccain
which is a great song
but we decided not to have it be our first dance
at our wedding because
one of the lines is
'i'll be love's suicide'
& that just didn't seem to mesh with the
white dress & tux & stuff
love's broken ankle, maybe
but not love's suicide...
i had a hard enough time with the song we did dance to
'i swear' by john michael montgomery
which was the first song we ever danced to
right at the beginning of our relationship
at our friends, billy & heather's wedding...
but i was a little worried about just having
been married in a church
in front of God & everybody
& then swearing by 'the moon & the stars & the sun'
even years after
i was not so keen on that song
so this song...
a little more up beat
cute as all get out
fun
sweet
honest about how life is not perfect
come on...
that is so us
especially the cute part
(see above picture)
:)
so thanks, buddy
for being so incredibly great
& for bringing to my attention
something that i had already sent out
for the whole blogosphere to see & hear
but didn't even know it...
(i'm sure glad it wasn't about
being in favor of kicking dogs or something)
& for you, my dear husband:
But there is not enough time,
And there is no, no song I could sing
And there is no, combination of words I could say
But I will still tell you one thing
We're better together
:)
& yes there are a few capitalized letters today!
thanks for noticing...
i figured if i was talking about
my favorite third grade teacher
it would be nice to give him
a few less things to circle with the red pen...
not a bunch
but a few...
i don't mind red
it's a nice color...
:)
